Chapter Six

Emily perched on the stool at Patsy’s breakfast bar and watched her mother mix up a batch of homemade cornbread. “How many of those do you have to cook up for the dressing?” she asked as Patsy poured the batter into a greased cast iron skillet.

“Today I’m making three,” she said as she popped the cornbread into the heated oven. “Alegra made the biscuits two days ago and put them through the Cuisinart yesterday, but somehow with everybody coming we didn’t get as far as the cornbread.” Patsy put a pod in the coffeemaker and flipped the handle.

“I was tempted to tell your father to just take us all out to eat but I hate to do that to your grandmother. This is her mother’s turkey dressing and Mom’s gotten too frail to cook it herself anymore.”

“Besides, how could Granddad have his usual field day ragging on all us grandkids in front of everybody in a restaurant?” Emily teased. “Gotta have the privacy of your daughter’s home to do that.”

Patsy rolled her eyes. “I swear, he’s gotten almost obsessed with this business of wanting all of you to go to law school and join the firm. That’s all he can talk about—why you three haven’t shown any interest in joining the firm like Kevin and his wife did. He’s especially incensed that Russ is working as a small-town deputy, now that he’s out of the Army. He thinks Russ really should be an attorney.”

“I thought he’d be more upset that Russ got himself booted out of the Army.”

“Nope, your father’s the one angry with him about that. Well, well, speak of the devil,” Patsy drawled as Russ wandered in the patio doors, bright-eyed but unshaven. “What time did you finally drag yourself home?”

“Yeah, what time did you get in? It must have been late since you missed all the excitement,” Emily added.

“What excitement?” Russ asked as he moved his mother’s coffee off the machine and put in a pod for his own cup.

“Jimmy had the flashback from hell and Jason stepped in and took care of everything,” Patsy said. “Rather masterfully, too. I was very impressed with that young man last night.”

“Good for Jason. Can’t say I’m surprised, though. It’s common practice in the military hospitals for the patients to help out some,” Russ said. “And I imagine he’s helped his support group also. So how bad was it last night?”

“Bad,” Patsy and Emily said in unison.

“I’ve never heard screaming like that,” Patsy admitted. “Does Jimmy have an especially bad case of PTSD?”

“He doesn’t have an especially good case,” Russ said dryly. “So where is everybody?”

“Daddy’s in his office catching up on paperwork, Jimmy’s still asleep, I’m on cooking duty with Mom, and Jason volunteered to take Holly and Carrie to the zoo. Holly wanted Jimmy to have a chance to rest before dinner tonight and Carrie was wired.”

“Nice of Jason to take them,” Russ observed. “Since Alegra’s with her family, Mom, my Y-chromosome notwithstanding, I’d be happy to help you and Emily with the cooking.
